Development of a new type of packaging materials for the food industry

Mardruk Opakowania Sp. z o.o. Sp. k. has received a grant from the European Union for project no. FENG.01.01-IP.02-3990/23, project title: 'Development of a new type of packaging materials for the food industry'.

The project concerns the development of innovative, eco-friendly, mono-material, recyclable, barrier and/or barrier-and-active polyethylene or polypropylene packaging products. The project comprises one module, which in turn comprises a total of 4 tasks, of which two are carried out as industrial research and the other two as development work.

Its result will be mono-material barrier, high-barrier and ultra-high-barrier packaging characterised by an increased barrier against gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen). This will be the overriding feature of the products developed and will translate into an extended shelf life for the food products packed in them, as well as into maintaining the quality and sensory properties of the packed product.

The barrier packaging (depending on the type of product packed and the user's expectations) will be able to be fitted with an additional inner active layer with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which will help limit or halt the growth of undesirable micro-organisms and thereby extend/ensure the freshness of the packed food product. An important feature of the products will be their eco-friendly character – because they will be mono-material (made from a uniform material; the inner laminate layer/coating thickness not exceeding 5%), they can be recycled.

Market roll-out will follow immediately after the completion of the research project, through the introduction of the new product into the offering of Mardruk Opakowania Sp. z o.o. Sp. k. The project is distinguished by high added value in terms of ecology, constituting an eco-innovation on a market scale, as well as in terms of counteracting climate change through the creation of solutions with high recycling potential.

The target group is companies engaged in the manufacture and distribution of packaging
